In endurance sports, the concept of “strength and conditioning” can vary from coach to coach. After meeting Clay and hearing about his training philosophy, I decided to give it a shot. Clay worked with both our Nordic skiing and Track & Field teams. Some of the biggest improvements were with our female athletes, who went from regionally competitive to becoming some of the top athletes in the state.

Train Off the Field to Win On the Field ( or court, or track…)
How many games are won in the first quarter? None.
-
- The time has passed where athletes can expect to win based on skill alone.
- Top athletes spend as much time training in the gym as they do practicing their skill.
- Are you putting in the work you should in the gym?
Master the Fundamentals
All the chain squats, rubber band drills, and parachute runs in the world are pointless if athletes have not learned the fundamentals.
-
- Facebook and Instagram abound with flashy and ridiculous training routines that athletes and coaches think are required to improve.
- 95% of athletes are trying to run before they crawl, and miss the foundation of functional movements and proper body mechanics.
- Are you getting caught up in the hype?
Mind, Body and … Injury Prevention
Sports Performance needs to go beyond strength and conditioning. Mental Toughness, Performance Nutrition, and Injury Prevention are the intangibles.
-
- If you’re as strong as an ox, but you are also as agile as one, you’re just a liability.
- The fastest athletes mean nothing if they are sitting injured on the bench.
- When was the last time your team prioritized the intangibles?
